Under English law, all employers* must insure against their legal liability for injury, disease or death to employees sustained by them and arising from their employment. The definition of “Employee” is usually extended to cover (in addition to those under a contract of employment) apprentices, trainees and others hired. The legal requirement is to insure for at least £5 million, but in practice most UK insurers offer £10 million cover. A Certificate of Employers’ Liability Insurance is provided for display at all places persons are employed to comply with employment legislation. Alternatively, this document can be made available to employees in an electronic form. *exceptions may apply to family partnerships and single employee Limited companies where they solely employ one director who owns 50% or more of the issued shares of the company. |
